What is a Sports Massage and how can it benefit me?

As the hours spent training and playing hours mount up, so do the little niggles. These niggling aches and pains can turn into a serious injury. Incorporating a regular sports massage to your workout routine can ease muscular and joint pain, prevent injuries and improve posture, muscular function and ultimately performance.

Sports massage incorporates many varied techniques, such as deep tissue massage, soft tissue release, muscle energy techniques, trigger point therapy and positional release, which can increase the blood flow that is needed for recovery, it will improve the range of motion and strength of injured muscles and accelerate their healing process.

Sports massage can:

We are also available to provide Sports Massage in the London and Essex areas for sporting events.

Having the expert services of an experienced massage therapist(s) on hand at your sporting event will help give it that complete and professional feel.

Pre-event: Before the event you need a quick treatment that will compliment your warm-up, to increase your circulation and flexibility and leave your muscles resilient and ready to go. This can be very specific work on a known problematic muscle or more general. This also provides an excellent opportunity to psyche yourself up before your event. The therapist will use very specific techniques, such as STR, which provide quick results and ensure the muscles are not subjected to uncomfortable deep pressure prior to performing.

After a hard event you need a massage that will increase your circulation to speed the removal of fatigue toxins, relieve your muscle spasms and prevent soreness.

What is Remedial Massage and how can it benefit me?

The techniques used in sports massage are also beneficial to those who need remedial massage therapy due to day-to-day problems or general over use injuries. These may include conditions such as neck/back/shoulder pain, headaches, migraines, muscular cramps, muscular pain/dysfunction, Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI), postural alignment, whiplash and general body disorders.

People involved in occupations which involve remaining in one position for a period of time such as office workers, professional drivers and company car drivers can benefit greatly from remedial massage.

This is the same for people involved in occupations which involve physical strain that can lead to overuse injuries and time off work. Performers, dancers, builders, construction workers, engineers and members of the emergency/uniformed services can all benefit from remedial massage.

At Romford Sports Massage we will treat any tightness, injury or dysfunction in a similar way to a sports injury and ensure the treatment is specific to the requirements of the individual.

What is Kinesiology Taping and how can it benefit me?

Kinesiology taping (or kinesio taping) is the application of a thin, stretchy, therapeutic tape that can benefit a wide variety of injuries and inflammatory conditions. It is almost identical to human skin in both thickness and elasticity, which allows it to be worn without binding, constricting or restriction of movement.

You would have noticed that more and more professional athletes use kinesiology taping improve their sporting performance. We use kinesiology taping in the clinic everyday with amazing instant pain-free or performance improving results. You won't believe how effective kinesiology taping is until you try it.

Kinesiology tape has a comprehensive array of therapeutic benefits. Because it can be left on for up to 5 days, these therapeutic benefits are available to the injured area 24 hours a day, significantly accelerating the healing process from trauma, injuries and inflammatory conditions.

1. Pain Relief
Kinesiology taping relieves pain through both physical and neurological mechanisms. The lifting action of the tape relieves pressure on pain receptors directly under the skin, allowing for quick relief from acute injuries. Chronic pain is affected through sensory stimulation of other types of nerve fibres This is especially effective for pain that persists after an injury has healed or for pain that is out of proportion to the severity of an injury.

2. Reduced Swelling, Inflammation and Bruising
Reduced pressure on the lymphatic drainage channels enhances the removal of fluids and other materials that collect in an injured area. This applies not only to sports injuries, but to other inflammatory conditions, including the extreme swelling of lymphodema.

3. Prevention or Relief from Spasms and Cramping
Enhanced circulation to working muscles helps deliver oxygen and nutrients at the cellular level as well as accelerate the removal of waste products. Both of these mechanisms can help prevent or relieve spasms and cramps in overused or injured muscles.

4. Speedier Recovery of Overused Muscles
Fatigued, overused muscles contain byproducts of exercise (such as lactic acid) that contribute to pain and stiffness and limit the ability to continue exercising. When kinesiology tape is used over these areas, enhanced removal of these byproducts allows for more rapid recovery. This could translate into improved performance in endurance events or more complete recovery between repetitive, high intensity events.

5. Structural Support for Weak or Injured Body Parts
The unique elastic properties of kinesiology tape allow it to provide support to an injured muscle or joint, discouraging harmful movements while still allowing a safe, healthy range of  motion.

6. Enhanced Strength and Muscle Tone in Weak or Injured Muscles
Loss of strength or muscle tone can result from pain, injury or a variety of neurological or muscular disorders. In these situations, the weakness can interfere with the ability to do the exercises that are critical to recovery or improving daily functioning. Kinesiology tape not only provides support to these areas, but it can also improve neurological muscle activation, allowing therapeutic exercises to be carried out more effectively. One of the major uses in this category is with infants and young children with hypotonia, poor muscle tone that limits their ability to learn to sit up, crawl, etc.

7. Allows Athletes to Remain Active while Injured
This is one of the most important benefits of kinesiology tape for competitive athletes. Injuries can be taped to relieve pain, minimise inflammation and provide support  for injured structures, without compromising a healthy range of motion. Except in the case of severe injuries, this can allow athletes to continue training and/or competing as their injuries heal.

What is Medical Acupuncture?

Medical Acupuncture is a therapeutic technique that involves inserting fine needles into certain points across the body to encourage healing and pain relief.

Needling specific body parts is thought to stimulate nerves under the skin and in the muscles of the body. This results in the body producing natural substances, such as pain-relieving endorphin's.

What is Osteopathic Spinal Manipulation?

Osteopathic Spinal Manipulation is the articulation of the joints within the spine and its junctions with the limbs.

Articulation is the cornerstone of most manual therapies, including osteopathy, physiotherapy, chiropractic, sports therapy and massage therapy.

Articulation uses a low amplitude (short distance) and low to moderate velocity (speed) of movement within the patients pain free range of motion while in dysfunction.

This aids the bodies natural lubricating system (synovial fluid) to embalm the joint with increased range of motion, decreased pain or both (ideally).

Articulation techniques have been shown to help relieve pain and increase range of motion in joints.

What is Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Manipulation (IASTM)?

IASTM is a simple, non-invasive form of manual therapy to manipulate or mobilise the soft tissue structures of the human body. IASTM is becoming increasingly popular these days among both practitioners and patients alike due to its remarkable safety and efficacy profile. The therapy is non-aggressive, yet effective, and can be applied either alone or in conjunction with supplementary exercises and additional modalities.

The procedure uses instruments to mechanically stimulate soft tissue structures to relieve musculoskeletal pain and discomfort and improve overall mobility and function.
